AUI's Safety Program
AUI's Safety Program Highlights
- AUI has implemented incentive awards for employees with safe work habits.
- Safety orientation is mandatory for new employees to prepare them for possible hazards in the field.
- Adherence to Orange Hard Hat Policy whereby new employees are required to wear orange hard hats for six months so that veteran employees are aware and can help train and protect them from possible hazards.
- Pre-employment, and post-accident drug testing for all employees.
- Routine and unannounced job site inspections.
- Continuous safety training for all employees.
- Weekly safety meetings are held at each job site to discuss the upcoming week's activities, to identify and address job-specific potential safety hazards, and to raise the overall awareness of safety.
- Monthly Safety Committee Meetings (company-wide) are conducted where employees discuss accidents and "near misses" for the month and each are followed up with suggestions for preventing similar accidents. This information is used to generate the topics for discussion in the succeeding weeks' Weekly Safety Meeting Outlines. In addition, this information is distributed to all employees in Monthly Safety Meeting Minutes.
- Adoption of an aggressive return-to-work program for injured employees.
- Complete dedication to safety by Foremen and Management.
- Stretching exercises each morning to prevent injuries.
Safety Incentive Program
AUI's safety incentive program offers substantial rewards if no lost-time accidents occur, company wide, during a calendar year. In 2002, a field employee won a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Beginning in 2004, two trips (for two people each) to Hawaii were established as the grand prize, which includes one week's paid vacation for each of the two employees. In addition, AUI has set aside $24,000 a year for monthly cash drawings (10 checks of $200 per month). Two foremen and their field crews are eligible for the monthly cash drawings provided the crew has no accidents for that month.
These Incentive Programs have been a success. For the last seven years, AUI has received the Platinum Award from the Associated Builders & Contractors Association in recognition of AUI's level of achievement and ongoing efforts in the development of its safety program. In 2004 and again in 2006, the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) awarded AUI the distinction of placing first nationwide in our category (Heavy Division for 500,001 - 700,000 work hours) for Safety Excellence. In 2005, AUI was chosen as the recipient of the 2005 William H Feather Safety Award by the National Utility Contractors Association in the 500K to 1M Man-hours Division for our commitment to safety. Also due to the success of our Safety Program, AUI has partnering agreements with Federal and State OSHA, recognizing AUI's safe work habits and excellent safety record.
